Points for checking of the answer papers
All questions have to be answered in the sequence that they are given in the question paper. The order cannot be changed.
Teachers will not give marks for content where the handwriting is not easily readable.
Clear handwriting, minimal scratching out / overwriting, neat and tidy presentation make a good impression and may result in some small mistakes being overlooked and work in favour of the student.
Here are a few ways in which you can help your child improve in the various subjects.
Std. 1 to 10 :
English :
Reading the lessons is an absolute MUST. It helps to remember character references, key words, relevant vocabulary and its spellings!
It also helps with content flow and being able to come up with educated guesses. Students need to listen to, read and speak more English!
Many students are often unable to express themselves in this language as they do not have enough exposure, practice and comfort. Watching good English movies and shows together is also a good way to try to create an ‘immersive’ English environment.
With such additional activities, sentence formations improve and they get a feel of the grammar as well. The students need to learn to ‘think’ in English, to be able to express themselves well and for that getting enough comfort with the language is necessary.
Doing the homework given everyday sincerely is a good way to get started on this path.
Solving MCQs on Walmiki helps too.
Math :
LOTS and LOTS of practice! Math is a subject where children cannot simply ‘read’ the materials and write the paper. It is equally important for students to be able to ‘visualise’ a word problem.
Having a teacher (or parent or tuition teacher) do the problem and then copying down the solution does not help improve Math performance at all. You can watch this video where Dr. Arpita Karkare talks about how to get students to do the “Math workout”.
If kids do the homework on their own and study regularly for the continuous assessments, it is a good starting point for improvement.

Science :
This subject requires the student to present information logically and explain things using the right scientific terms and come straight to the point.
Reading the lessons helps.
For numericals (like Math), practice is required.
Diagrams are expected to be drawn in proportion and labeled properly.

Std. 3 to 10 :
Marathi :
In a lot of households, Marathi is the mother tongue. But there is a difference between the way it is written formally and spoken informally.
Students often struggle with spellings, especially when जोडाक्षरं are used. It is necessary that the students pay close attention to how a word is written and pronounced, to remember its correct spelling.
Reading the lessons helps greatly as they get used to ‘seeing’ the spellings and the keywords for the answers.
Writing practice helps students get better in this subject.
This subject is all the way up to Std. 10 and is quite scoring too! (A huge number of students have got full marks in Marathi in the board exam, it just needs a systematic approach. In fact some of our students who moved abroad mid-schooling also got extra credit for having studied Marathi!)

Std. 6 to 10 :
Social Studies :
This subject involves a lot of names and details, so reading the chapters multiple times is recommended.
At Walnut, we do not ask questions which require a large amount of memorization, but they are expected to have understood the logical flow of the content.
For Std. 6, 7 and 8 we even allow reference sheets so that the children can jot down important points.
But they also have to know how to elaborate and make the answer worthy of the marks allotted to it. For example, you cannot write a very short answer for a 4 mark question and expect to be given full credit. The English language skill helps here.
Map practice is also necessary.
